Geoff Wells

Geoff Wells's semi abstracted figures are often placed within scenes of nature. His paintings are an exploration into the essence of human nature through the use of color and form. He uses combinations of layered block colors to form his figures which seem to fade in and out of their environment. His works often elicit a distinct sense of place within an uncertain environment in which his subjects dwell. About the artist

Geoff Wells received a PhD in Political Philosophy from the University of Texas. He pursued a career in academia, becoming a tenured professor at Wayland Baptist University, in Plainview, Texas. Along with writing for various academic journals, he has written numerous articles including a critical review for the John Locke Society. Geoff has also published numerous creative literary works for publications such as Analecta, 32 Poems, Café Review, and Cholla Needles.

Strongly influenced by the life and art of his late wife, Sherry Wells, along with the works of Pablo Picasso and Georgia O'Keefe, Geoff aims to paint what is "essential to the understanding of the human condition; the inner representation of the human spirit." The figures in his paintings are immediately recognizable as such, but are sometimes abstracted to the point that they seem to fade in and out of the backgrounds in which they find themselves. The faces are often featureless but they convey strong emotion. His muted palette and abstract compositions allow for immediate empathy.
