Arlington-Based Photographer Glen Wilbert: A Talent to Watch

Arlington, TX - Glen Wilbert, an acclaimed amateur photographer based in Arlington, is garnering attention for his distinctive approach marked by keen spatial harmony and vibrant tonal contrast. His recent works have been finalists in the prestigious "COLORS" and "OPEN CALL" Life Framers juried photography competitions and have received Honorable Mention in three categories at the 2023 Minimalist Photography Awards. His pieces were also featured in the juried "Colors" exhibition at the PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, VT.

Wilbert draws inspiration from the peripatetic works of Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, and Stephen Shore, offering a fresh perspective on familiar scenes. He is profoundly influenced by minimalism and pop art, drawing from the geometric clarity of Piet Mondrian, the conceptual wit of Ed Ruscha, and the vibrant compositions of David Hockney. His recent work, "Lifeguard Camp Broadway Boogie Woogie," exemplifies these influences and has been selected for the 37th Annual Northern National Art Competition in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

Wilbert's high-key photography imbues his compositions with a striking luminosity, balanced by subtle humor and irony. His approach to minimalism focuses on eliminating extraneous details while preserving recognizability, often drawing parallels to the great American road trip. "When possible, I enjoy adding a touch of whimsy to my photographs and love the thrill when I capture a 'decisive moment'—an object in motion or a momentary reflection of light that brings an image to life," says Wilbert.

Balancing his artistic pursuits with his career as a radiologist, Wilbert finds solace in photography. He explains, "It allows me to replace my search for what is wrong with a search for what is right," underscoring his transformative engagement with his subjects.

Glen Wilbert’s work is currently showcased at the Texas Photographic Society’s 36th Annual Members Only Show, on display at the Arlington Museum of Art. This exhibition, which opened on May 10th, will continue through June 23rd. For more details, please visit the Arlington Museum of Art website.
