Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940 | The Modern

The Modern is presenting their first intergenerational show dedicated to Caribbean and African diasporic art. Surrealism and Us includes over 50 works that focus on the interpretation of a modernist movement by Caribbean and Black Artists. From installations to paintings to sculpture, a wide range of media will be present with works from the 1940’s to present day. Inspired by the essay “1943: Surrealism and Us” by Suzanne Césaire, this exhibition  focuses on the reinterpretation of the European avant-garde by Caribbean and Black Artists, creating a fusion of Caribbean aesthetics, Afrosurrealism, and Afrofuturism.
