Picasso’s Muses: Between Inspiration and Obsession

Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), synonymous with modern art, boasted an extensive artistic career that endures in contemporary consciousness. Regrettably, Picasso's legacy is tainted by documented instances of misogynistic and abusive behavior towards the women in his life. This troubling aspect of his persona cannot be divorced from his artistic narrative. Notably, Picasso drew inspiration from his intimate partners, who assumed roles as muses in his ever-evolving artistic journey. These women played pivotal roles in Picasso's creative trajectory and subsequent renown, yet their significance often remains overshadowed. "Picasso's Muses: Between Inspiration and Obsession," an exploration of seven works on paper from the DMA's collection, serves as a tribute to these muses. This exhibition seeks to reevaluate their contributions, shedding light on their integral part in Picasso's oeuvre, even fifty years after the artist's passing.
